Herbert T Forrest Ltd achieved the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard and maintained the ISO 9001 Quality Standard during April 08. The standard was comprehensively audited and certified by AJA Registrars, of Bristol over a 5 day period, to measure every aspect of the company's environmental impacts - from energy use to waste minimisation. The standard means that the company is committed to measuring and improving its environmental performance year-on-year.

ISO accreditation

Congratulations to you all on achieving ISO 9001:2000. In August 2006 the board of directors granted approval to fast track the accreditation process with the aim of achieving the standard early in 2007.

ISO

There were two main driving forces behind achieving the BS EN ISO 9001:2000 standard:

  • To ensure continuity of work from existing clients and to contribute to the success of newly tendered work
  • To meet our customers expectations and needs by meeting key quality requirements.

During December 2006 a full systems audit was prepared and the new Quality Management System (QMS) audited by a consultant and our Systems Manager. This process was a significant milestone as this would be the litmus test for the new QMS.

Early in January we received notification of the audit – a four day inspection commencing on the 30th January, two days at Beech House and two days out on site in Preston, Blackburn and Bolton and the Bolton office.

On the afternoon of Friday 2nd February 2007 the external auditor called a meeting with the QA team and company directors to provide the results of the audit. The auditor was very impressed with the management of the QMS and how it has been successfully implemented and adopted by the company, the auditor commented, “To be recommended for accreditation first time round with no major non conformances, particularly for a construction company, demonstrates a high level of commitment and leadership from top management.”

Many thanks to all those employees involved in particular those who were subject to audit by the external auditor:

Ray Cross, John Masterson, Neil Pickup, Andrew Harrison, Steve Houghton, Ken Godfrey, Steve Clarke, Darren Maxwell, David Ashworth, Adrian Webster, Richard Standing, Bryn Jones, Jill Piner and Graham Hacking.

Contractor of the year

Not just one national award

SME Contractor of the Year 2006

The construction industry’s 14 most prestigious awards were presented on the night of 5 October 2006 in front of more than 1,000 industry executives, recognising and celebrating the achievements of the industry.

This year’s Contract Journal Construction Industry Awards attracted more entries than ever before, proving that more companies in construction are keen to prove that they are the best. After a preliminary judging round, 66 of those entries made it on to the shortlist, and stood a chance of winning one of the most prestigious awards in the construction industry.

We entered the SME Contractor of the year (Small and Medium Enterprises). This category is open to companies with a turnover of less than £50 million per annum and we faced stiff competition from five other short-listed companies.

This is the second year that we have entered this category, we were short-listed last year, but we have won the award this year. We should all be proud of this achievement, the panel of 15 judges read like a who’s who of senior construction professionals. The judges noted that our “strength at measuring improvements” was central to us winning. This demonstrates that our approach to KPIs and performance measurement is seen as a differentiator and gives us a competitive advantage.

...but two!!!!!

Housing Excellence Award

Tim Forrest with the award for 'Contractor of the Year 2006'

More than 600 of the country’s leading housing professionals flocked to the 2006 Housing Excellence Awards at Mere Golf and Country Club in Cheshire. Established in 2004 by the leading industry magazines Northern Housing, Southern Housing and Midlands Housing, the awards aim to celebrate those who have distinguished themselves over the previous 12 months in both the social and private housing sectors.

The winners were selected by a panel of leading industry experts including former president of the Chartered Institute of Housing Ian Richardson, Local Government Taskforce member Noel Foley and Doctor Tom Manion of Irwell Valley Housing.

This year’s awards attracted a record number of nominations from across the sector, and the judges’ task in selecting the winners was not an easy one.

We had been nominated for two categories; ‘Tenant Care Scheme of the Year’ and ‘Contractor of the Year’ and we are pleased to report that we won the award for the Contractor of the Year.

We would like to thank all the clients, suppliers and tenants that nominated us for these prestigious awards and all employees of the company without whom this achievement would not have been possible.
